Centurion: The Best Tank Ever. Period.

Britain’s wartime struggle to build a truly versatile armored vehicle gives the Centurion’s development a compelling starting point. The presentation frames earlier light, infantry and cruiser tanks as products of a fragmented doctrine, then shows how experience with designs such as the Cromwell and Comet helped push the Army toward the idea of a “universal tank.” That progression makes the Centurion feel less like an isolated engineering triumph and more like the culmination of lessons learned through repeated compromise and failure.

The technical explanation is one of the strongest parts of the piece. Changes such as abandoning Christie suspension, improving frontal protection, eliminating the hull machine-gunner position, adding auxiliary electrical power and using pressure ventilation are connected to practical battlefield needs rather than simply listed as specifications. The cutaway Centurion is particularly useful because it turns crew positions, ammunition storage, the Meteor engine and the loader-operator’s responsibilities into something viewers can visualize rather than leaving the discussion at the level of numbers and terminology.

Just as importantly, the presentation does not pretend the design emerged fully perfected. The awkward Polsten cannon and rear Besa machine gun were dropped, the petrol-powered Meteor produced serious range limitations, and the mono-wheel fuel trailer is treated as a particularly unsuccessful attempt to solve that problem. Later improvements—including larger internal fuel capacity, the L7 105-millimeter gun, infrared equipment and foreign diesel-engine conversions—support the broader argument that adaptability was central to the Centurion’s longevity.

Combat history provides the bulk of the evidence for the enthusiastic verdict. Korea is presented as the tank’s proving ground, with particular attention to extreme winter conditions, mobility and its usefulness as mobile artillery rather than dramatic tank-versus-tank dueling. Australian service in Vietnam expands that case by emphasizing jungle mobility, bunker destruction, mine resistance and infantry support, while Israeli and Indian service is used to show how the platform continued performing effectively in very different terrain and against later armored opponents.

Some of the historical conclusions are delivered more confidently than the evidence presented can fully establish. Claims that Centurions consistently outperformed contemporary Soviet designs, that 177 Israeli Centurions effectively saved Israel during the Yom Kippur War, or that the Centurion is simply the best tank ever built are interpretations rather than settled conclusions demonstrated through comparative analysis here. The combat examples are impressive, but there is little sustained comparison with competing designs using common measures such as reliability, crew survivability, logistics, cost, strategic mobility or total battlefield effectiveness.

The breadth of international service nevertheless makes the central argument much stronger than simple nostalgia would. Israeli engine and transmission changes, continued Indian combat use, South African Olifant development and specialized British variants show how much useful life operators were able to extract from the basic platform. Recovery vehicles, bridge layers, engineering vehicles, the amphibious BARV and even the target tank also directly undermine the early concern that Centurion would not adapt well to specialist roles.

Presentation-wise, the enthusiasm is infectious without preventing meaningful criticism of the machine’s weaknesses. Physical access to multiple surviving examples gives the discussion unusual immediacy, and the movement between development, interior design, combat service and unusual variants keeps a long historical survey engaging. The main limitation is that the celebratory thesis is largely established through selected successes rather than a rigorous comparison against every serious rival, so the case for “one of the great tank designs” is considerably stronger than the absolute claim that no tank was ever better.
