Can Audi's new RS5 finally beat the BMW M3 in a drag race?

The most revealing number in this comparison is not the Audi RS5’s claimed 639 horsepower or 825Nm of torque, but its roughly 600kg weight disadvantage. On paper, the Audi arrives with substantially more power and torque than the BMW M3 Competition, plus an electric motor capable of delivering an immediate shove. The BMW counters with a simpler 530-horsepower straight-six setup and dramatically less mass. Framing the contest around whether hybrid assistance can overcome that penalty gives the races a useful technical question rather than reducing the video to a sequence of launches.

The opening drag race initially appears to favor the Audi, but Nick’s difficulty preparing the BMW’s launch control prevents it from being a meaningful clean comparison. The video acknowledges that problem rather than pretending otherwise, and subsequent runs provide a much better test. Once both cars launch properly, the M3’s advantage becomes increasingly convincing, culminating in an 11.3-second standing quarter mile against the RS5’s 11.8 seconds. That half-second gap is substantial enough to support the central observation that the Audi’s additional output does not compensate for its additional mass in this particular test.

The rolling races reveal where the hybrid system does provide a meaningful advantage. Audi’s boost function allows the electric assistance to respond immediately, and the RS5 performs particularly well when the BMW’s combustion engine is caught at lower revs. The explanation that the electric motor contributes an additional 170 horsepower helps connect what viewers see on the runway to the mechanical difference between the cars. At the same time, the varying drive modes, manual and automatic shifting, and boost settings make these runs less controlled than a laboratory-style comparison; they are useful demonstrations of real performance characteristics, but individual results should not be stretched into universal conclusions about hybrid technology.

Braking provides the clearest demonstration of the Audi’s weight problem. From 100 mph, the BMW repeatedly stops in a shorter distance, and swapping drivers produces essentially the same result. Repeating the test after questioning whether one driver braked early is good practice within the informal format, because it addresses an obvious source of error instead of simply accepting the first result. The video reasonably associates the outcome with the Audi’s extra mass, although the test by itself cannot establish weight as the sole cause without controlling for tires, brake specifications, temperatures and other variables.

The comparison is strongest when it lets the cars demonstrate their differences rather than trying to turn them into a referendum on hybridization. The suggestion that performance hybrids might principally be a “cheat code” for meeting EU emissions requirements is entertaining provocation, but two specific performance cars cannot establish such a broad conclusion. Likewise, the M3 winning this quarter mile does not demonstrate that hybrid technology inherently harms performance; it shows that this RS5’s additional power and electric assistance are insufficient to overcome its weight disadvantage against this M3 under these conditions. The closing reference to another hybrid-versus-non-hybrid BMW comparison at least acknowledges that the broader question remains unsettled.

There is plenty of personality around the testing, including jokes about the Audi’s bulk, the lost radio, sound checks and attempts to exploit the cars’ rear-drive modes. The RS5’s Torque Rear setting and the M3’s full rear-wheel-drive mode produce an amusing diversion, although the doughnuts add little to the actual performance comparison. The constant banter keeps what could have been a repetitive sequence of straight-line runs lively, but occasionally pushes the technical discussion into the background just when the results invite closer analysis.

As an entertainment-focused drag-race comparison, however, the video builds its case effectively. It progresses through imperfect launches, rolling acceleration, braking, another acceleration test and increasingly decisive standing starts before providing actual quarter-mile times. That structure gives the BMW’s eventual victory more credibility than a single race would have provided, while also showing that the RS5’s hybrid system has genuine situational advantages. The M3 wins the headline contest convincingly, but the more interesting result is that the Audi’s considerable extra power can be both impressively effective and conspicuously insufficient depending on what the cars are being asked to do.

It is an engaging comparison whose specific BMW-versus-Audi verdict is considerably stronger than its general case against performance hybrids.
