Framework 13 Pro: The Modular Laptop is Real!

Framework’s latest 13-inch machine makes its strongest impression by treating repairability as part of a premium laptop rather than an excuse for compromise. The video establishes that tension effectively by recalling how often modular technology has sounded promising without becoming a compelling finished product, then asking whether Framework has finally moved beyond the category of products people admire in principle but hesitate to buy. Using the MacBook Pro as the recurring benchmark gives that question a clear standard: the Framework does not need to match Apple in every respect, but it needs to get close enough that replaceable ports, components, and major assemblies become meaningful advantages rather than compensation for inferior hardware.

That case begins convincingly with the chassis and modular exterior. The CNC aluminum construction, matte finish, full-size backlit keyboard, haptic trackpad, fingerprint reader, interchangeable expansion cards, removable input cover, and replaceable display bezel make the machine feel unusually configurable without looking like an experiment. The demonstration of choosing three USB-C modules and an SD card reader is especially useful because it turns “modular” into something immediately understandable: ports can be changed according to the owner's needs rather than permanently determined at purchase. The replaceable input cover and tool-free bezel extend that philosophy beyond ports, while Framework's parts guides and included screwdriver reinforce the idea that owners are actually expected to work on their machines.

The praise is tempered by worthwhile physical criticism. The reviewer estimates the construction at roughly 85% of a MacBook Pro rather than pretending modularity has erased every tradeoff, noting that twisting the chassis can cause the upper and lower sections to separate slightly and that the hinge exhibits more wobble than some competitors. Similar comparisons work well for the display and input hardware. The 2880-by-1920 touchscreen, 3:2 aspect ratio, anti-glare finish, and full sRGB coverage are presented as particularly strong productivity features, while the lack of full DCI-P3 coverage is identified as a possible disadvantage for photography or video work. The keyboard and large haptic trackpad also receive substantial praise without being declared best-in-class. This repeated “most of the quality, dramatically more modular” framing is simplistic as a numerical comparison, but it communicates the central tradeoff clearly.

The internal hardware is where Framework's philosophy becomes more consequential. The reviewed configuration has 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD, a 74Wh battery, and the higher-end Ultra X7 processor, with the video describing memory, storage, and battery as upgradeable or replaceable. Everyday productivity performance is reported as responsive across word processing, email, Slack, Notion, and task-management workloads, with integrated graphics capable of some light gaming. That is useful experiential evidence for the intended productivity role, although the broader performance comparison with Apple Silicon remains fairly loose. Saying benchmark performance could be considered around 80% of a MacBook Pro is less informative than showing specific benchmark results, sustained workloads, temperatures, fan behavior, or battery testing would have been.

Two weaknesses receive much less charitable treatment: the speakers and webcam. The speakers are described as dramatically behind the MacBook Pro despite Dolby Atmos branding, while the 1080p webcam reportedly produces heavy noise and artifacts during calls and recordings. Those are meaningful shortcomings on a premium productivity machine, particularly at the prices discussed later. The physical switches that independently disconnect the camera and microphone are an excellent privacy-oriented feature, but they do not compensate for poor camera quality. More direct samples or comparisons would have strengthened this section, especially because the criticism of both components is unusually strong.

Linux also fits naturally into the broader argument about ownership and control. The reviewer discusses Ubuntu as a viable productivity environment, pointing to browsers and applications including GIMP, Blender, 1Password, Discord, Todoist, Steam, and games while appreciating an experience with less emphasis on Copilot, ads, and other elements criticized in Windows. The important qualification is correctly acknowledged: Linux only makes sense when the software a particular user needs is available. Still, this portion is more of an enthusiastic personal impression than a thorough evaluation of Linux compatibility. There is little examination of driver behavior, sleep and wake reliability, battery performance under Linux, peripheral support, or the workflow compromises that could determine whether someone can realistically switch.

Price ultimately makes the long-term argument essential. The video says the machine increased from a $1,500 preorder price to $1,600, while the high-end configuration rose from $2,100 to $2,900, making its day-one value difficult to defend purely on specifications and finish. The stronger proposition is ownership over time: replacing a damaged keyboard, changing ports, upgrading components, or installing a newer motherboard rather than replacing the entire laptop. The claim that a new motherboard can be installed in an older Framework 13 is the most compelling evidence offered that modularity extends beyond cosmetic customization and basic repair. The video cannot establish what future parts, prices, or upgrade paths will look like years from now, so some of that value necessarily depends on Framework continuing its compatibility strategy. Even so, focusing on longevity rather than pretending the machine wins every conventional comparison gives the review a persuasive and appropriately nuanced conclusion.
