Gyeon Survives the Chemical Gauntlet While Cheaper Coatings Fall Away

I've Never Seen A Ceramic Coating This Good! Not Even Close!

Eight ceramic coatings ranging from a $13 spray-on product to a $110 hand-applied coating face a deliberately punishing comparison built around slickness, water behavior, chemical resistance, plastic protection, and ease of application. Hybrid Solutions, Mothers, Shine Armor, Griot's, Ethos, AvalonKing, Gyeon, and Gtechniq are applied to separate sections of a carefully cleaned and decontaminated hood, with additional applications made to polycarbonate sheets. After 48 hours of curing, the coatings begin a sequence of progressively aggressive exposures involving strip wash, iron remover, bug-and-tar remover, wheel and tire cleaners, and degreaser. The resulting differences are substantial: some inexpensive products lose most of their apparent protection relatively quickly, Griot's remains remarkably competitive for a spray-and-wipe formula, and Gyeon and Gtechniq endure nearly everything thrown at them.

The preparation gives the comparison a stronger foundation than simply applying products to an existing finish and spraying water over them. The hood is washed with strip wash, treated with a clay bar and iron remover, washed again, divided into test sections, and measured for baseline slickness. Application instructions are followed individually rather than forcing every coating through an identical procedure, which matters because the products range from quick sprays to coatings requiring applicators, leveling, buffing, and cure time. Ease-of-use scoring reflects that distinction without exaggerating it: spray-and-wipe formulas receive the best rating, while the three hand-applied products score only slightly worse. One limitation is that each product occupies a different area of the same hood, so localized differences in surface condition, water flow, or chemical exposure could influence close comparisons despite the consistent preparation.

Initial slickness immediately demonstrates that price and tactile performance do not move together. Bare paint requires 3.3 pounds of force to move the weighted sponge, while Griot's and Ethos reduce that figure to only 0.6 pounds. The inexpensive Hybrid Solutions follows at 0.9 pounds, and Gtechniq reaches 1.2 pounds. By contrast, AvalonKing needs 2 pounds and Gyeon surprisingly requires 3.8 pounds, making it less slick by this particular method than the untreated baseline. That result is valuable because the eventual winner performs poorly in one measurable characteristic rather than conveniently dominating every category. The weighted-sponge method also gives slickness a repeatable numerical basis, although it should be understood as this test's measure of sliding resistance rather than a complete measurement of how easily a coated vehicle will clean in real use.

Water behavior becomes the main indicator of durability as increasingly aggressive chemicals are introduced. Hybrid Solutions performs impressively for $13 at first, while Mothers and especially Shine Armor deteriorate relatively early. Griot's remains one of the standout values, retaining strong beading after treatments that significantly weaken several competitors. Ethos also begins extremely well but loses more performance during the later chemical stages. AvalonKing is the most conspicuous disappointment because its $60 price and claimed multi-year protection do not translate into strong hydrophobic performance under this accelerated test. Gyeon and Gtechniq, meanwhile, remain exceptionally resistant through repeated strip washing, iron remover, bug-and-tar remover, wheel cleaners, and degreaser, with Gyeon receiving a narrow final advantage based on the observed water behavior.

That durability test is useful precisely because it is severe, but its severity also limits what can be concluded from it. Repeated concentrated exposure to specialized cleaners over a short period is not equivalent to months or years of sunlight, weather, ordinary washing, road contamination, temperature cycles, and environmental wear. A coating surviving this chemical sequence demonstrates resistance under the conditions shown; it does not establish that a claimed two- or three-year lifespan has been verified. Likewise, loss of tight water beading does not necessarily demonstrate that every protective property of a coating has disappeared. The presenter generally describes what can actually be observed—beading, sheeting, runoff time, and slickness—but phrases such as "used up" sometimes treat degraded hydrophobic behavior as a broader conclusion about the coating than the test directly establishes.

The polycarbonate test adds a useful second surface and changes parts of the ranking. After hot-water washing without detergent, Gyeon provides the strongest observed water repellency, followed by Gtechniq and Ethos, while inexpensive Hybrid Solutions still demonstrates hydrophobic behavior and beats AvalonKing in their direct comparison. The presenter connects ceramic coatings on plastic with protection against ultraviolet damage and reduced dirt accumulation, but this experiment tests water behavior rather than UV resistance or long-term contamination. It therefore supports the comparative hydrophobic ranking on the tested polycarbonate but does not independently verify UV-protection claims. Even so, including plastic is worthwhile because coatings are commonly applied beyond painted panels, and performance on the hood does not automatically establish how the products behave on another material.

Repeating the weighted-sponge measurement after the chemical sequence provides a strong final check because it shows that hydrophobic durability and slickness are not interchangeable. Gyeon remains the least slick of the leading coatings at 3.3 pounds, while Ethos finishes at 2.3, Gtechniq at 2.5, and Griot's at 2.6 pounds. That makes the final recommendation appropriately conditional rather than universal. Griot's is selected as the strongest spray-and-wipe option because it combines convenience with impressive chemical resistance, while Gyeon wins overall durability and Gtechniq finishes close enough that the presenter recommends buying whichever of those two is cheaper. The test does not evaluate long-term outdoor durability, gloss quantitatively, scratch resistance, UV exposure, repeated ordinary washing, or cost per application, so it cannot settle every ceramic-coating question. Within its chosen tests, however, the large separation between products is convincing enough to challenge the idea that all products marketed around ceramic protection provide comparable performance—and it does so without requiring the most expensive product to win.
