CaseOh Plays An Ice Fishing Horror Game

A simple fishing assignment establishes an unusually calm foundation for the horror, with CaseOh learning to drill through the ice, manage the reel and deliver his catches to a strange old man. His early confusion over whether he is somehow employed by this demanding fisherman becomes a recurring joke, especially as the man devours fish after fish without appearing remotely satisfied. That repetitive setup initially feels almost mundane, but the old man's behavior gives even the ordinary tasks an undercurrent of unease.

CaseOh's commentary works particularly well because he notices the warning signs without immediately treating every unusual detail as proof of danger. Footsteps repeatedly seem to follow him across the ice, yet there is enough uncertainty for him to question what he heard. A warning apparently saying not to let the man onto the premises adds another layer of suspicion, while the player's increasing willingness to obey simply because the old man might be dangerous turns the fishing errands into a funny form of reluctant survival.

The game builds its mystery gradually through exploration rather than abruptly abandoning the fishing mechanics. Retrieving a shovel, clearing an avalanche and gaining access to another lake all extend the playable area while preserving the basic catch-and-deliver structure. CaseOh recognizes that the peaceful routine cannot continue indefinitely, and his anticipation of a lake monster or some other threat helps maintain tension during sections that otherwise involve repeated versions of the same activity.

Repetition is also the clearest weakness. The old man repeatedly asks for additional fish, and although his bottomless appetite is intentionally strange, several catches play out with little meaningful variation. CaseOh's jokes about how much the man has eaten help considerably, as does the ability to carry multiple fish, but the middle portion could reach its darker developments sooner without sacrificing the deliberately slow escalation.

Once CaseOh reaches the gated fishing area, the atmosphere becomes more effective. The disappearance of the music, continued footsteps and brief appearance of a dark figure make the previously comfortable environment feel exposed. His initial assumption that the figure might simply be a graphical glitch is especially effective because the realization that it is apparently intentional produces a more natural scare than exaggerated anticipation would have.

The ending favors ambiguity over a conventional confrontation. After being sent back toward the lake, the experience ends with the old man apparently left waiting for another person to arrive and supply him with fish, rather than providing a detailed explanation for the footsteps, dark presence or man's nature. CaseOh responds positively to that unsettling simplicity, comparing the experience to a creepypasta and praising it enthusiastically. His energetic closing reaction fits the stream-oriented presentation, even if calling it "game of the year" is clearly playful enthusiasm rather than a developed assessment.

Pros

  • The ordinary ice-fishing routine provides an effective contrast with the increasingly unsettling footsteps, warnings and distant figure.
  • CaseOh's suspicion of the endlessly hungry old man creates a consistent comedic thread without eliminating the horror.
  • The dark figure is introduced subtly enough that CaseOh initially mistakes it for a graphical issue, making the realization more effective.
  • Changes in location, sound and access gradually increase the sense that something is wrong.
  • The ambiguous ending preserves the game's strange creepypasta-like atmosphere instead of overexplaining the threat.

Cons

  • Repeated requests to catch and deliver more fish make the middle stretch longer than the underlying mystery requires.
  • Several fishing sequences offer little mechanical or narrative variation beyond increasing the number of catches.
  • The abrupt ending leaves the footsteps, dark figure and old man's exact nature largely unexplained, which may feel underdeveloped despite fitting the game's ambiguity.

A deliberately mundane fishing loop becomes an entertaining slow-burn horror experience through strange behavior, unexplained footsteps and one effectively understated visual scare. CaseOh's humor keeps the repetitive stretches lively, while his genuine uncertainty helps the sparse horror elements land when they finally appear.
