That basic success gives the experiment a satisfying payoff rather than leaving the hardware as merely another obsolete curiosity.

Getting there is appropriately messy. The damaged installation disc, sketchy driver sources, incompatible software, confusing device roles, and failure on a newer Windows machine all illustrate how difficult maintaining old peripherals can become once their original software ecosystem disappears. Moving to Windows 7 finally allows both adapters to pair, and the moment a disconnected flash drive suddenly appears through the powered remote adapter effectively demonstrates what the technology was designed to accomplish. The troubleshooting is lengthy, but most of it contributes directly to understanding why an otherwise functional product can become nearly unusable through software obsolescence.

The testing becomes particularly useful once the novelty wears off.
