Battlefield Gear Failures Show the Cost of Solving the Wrong Problem

Military equipment can fail without being mechanically useless, and Jeff Gurwitch's strongest examples are systems that worked technically while proving poorly matched to how soldiers actually fought. Drawing heavily on his own Special Forces experience, including participation in user evaluations of the SCAR Light and SPEAR body armor, he argues that several Global War on Terror-era failures emerged from requirements that looked reasonable during development but became impractical in actual use. The Mark 23 was enormous and rapidly overtaken by the M4A1's versatility, the SCAR Light introduced reliability problems without offering enough advantage over existing carbines, and the SPEAR vest reportedly required field modifications just to remain secure and carry equipment properly. Later examples broaden the criticism toward procurement philosophy itself, particularly when protection, technological novelty, or universal solutions appear to have been prioritized over mobility and practical battlefield needs.

The Mark 23 discussion establishes that theme particularly well because Gurwitch does not characterize it as a bad pistol. He remembers it as exceptionally accurate during the Special Forces qualification course in 1997 and explains that its intended "offensive pistol" role made more sense in an era when operators might use an M16A2 outdoors and switch to an MP5 for dedicated close-quarters work. In his telling, the Mark 23 was supposed to provide a compact suppressed .45 ACP option that could accompany the rifle and then take over during close-range operations. The problem was that the resulting handgun was so large that Special Forces personnel largely rejected carrying it, while the arrival of the compact M4A1 around the same period undermined the entire concept by providing one rifle platform suitable for both broader engagements and room clearing. That makes the Mark 23 less an example of defective engineering than of a requirement becoming obsolete almost as soon as the finished product appeared.

His account of the Mark 16 SCAR Light is more compelling because he says he participated in its final user review at Fort Bragg in 2007 and helped write the resulting paper. The shortcomings he describes are concrete: a weak stock latch, a barrel-change process less convenient than the concept implied, a reciprocating charging handle that could interfere with operation, and most seriously, spent cases or rounds becoming trapped in the upper receiver area in a way that required disassembly to clear. Gurwitch acknowledges that the rifle performed especially well during automatic fire and says later civilian versions corrected the problems he encountered, but his evaluation group's central question was whether the weapon provided enough benefit over the M4A1 to justify adoption. According to his account, the answer was no. Contrasting that outcome with the more successful SCAR Heavy also prevents the criticism from becoming a blanket dismissal of the platform.

The XM25 represents a different type of failure: a technologically sophisticated answer searching for enough suitable targets to justify its burden. Gurwitch explains the concept of programmable 25 mm airburst ammunition intended to engage enemies behind cover, then emphasizes the practical cost of assigning a soldier an almost 20-pound weapon with a five-round magazine and a specialized mission. His argument is that experienced opponents in Afghanistan moved, dispersed, and did not consistently present the ideal defilade targets envisioned for the system, potentially leaving the soldier carrying it with limited usefulness during many engagements. He then extends that argument into the present by contending that inexpensive FPV drones can increasingly attack concealed targets without forcing a front-line soldier to carry such a specialized launcher. That comparison is provocative, but it is also the section most dependent on Gurwitch's own tactical judgment; the presentation does not provide engagement data, program records, cost comparisons, or testing evidence sufficient to establish that drones make renewed airburst concepts broadly obsolete.

The SPEAR body armor section benefits again from direct personal involvement. Gurwitch says he participated in testing in 1999 and describes vertical webbing that restricted practical pouch arrangement, magazine pouches whose retention design undermined the supposed advantage of faster horizontal reloads, and low-quality hook-and-loop material that could allow the vest to separate at the shoulders when heavily loaded and moving. His strongest evidence is experiential: he recalls Green Berets taping the shoulders together and having horizontal webbing sewn onto issued vests to make them more useful, while also saying he wore the system during deployments to Iraq before it was replaced. The account vividly illustrates the gap between a design feature sounding innovative in a briefing and soldiers having to alter issued equipment themselves. Still, estimates such as 90 percent of users modifying the vest and broad claims about how commonly particular fixes appeared are recollections rather than documented statistics within the video.

The rapid-fire criticism of the Universal Camouflage Pattern is much less measured. Gurwitch describes the gray-green-tan digital camouflage as ineffective across both Iraq and Afghanistan, condemns the expense of replacing uniforms and equipment around it, and goes so far as to suggest that whoever approved it should apologize to families of soldiers killed while wearing the pattern. His anger communicates how strongly he believes the uniform failed troops, but that final leap is not supported by evidence presented here. Demonstrating poor camouflage performance would not by itself establish that particular deaths resulted from the uniform, and no casualty analysis, comparative visibility testing, procurement documentation, or specific incidents are offered. The segment would have been stronger had it remained focused on the operational shortcomings Gurwitch says soldiers experienced rather than connecting those shortcomings rhetorically to individual combat deaths.

The IOTV criticism returns to the video's more useful recurring question: how much protection becomes counterproductive when soldiers must carry it continuously? Gurwitch interprets the vest's extensive coverage as evidence of an Army culture highly focused on reducing casualties, then argues that weight and restriction can themselves undermine survivability by reducing mobility and offensive effectiveness. He contrasts the IOTV with a lighter plate carrier and notes that the hard ballistic plate protecting the most critical area is not necessarily larger simply because the surrounding vest provides more soft-armor coverage. He also cites responses from former soldiers on his subreddit who reportedly named the IOTV repeatedly when asked which GWOT equipment they disliked. That provides anecdotal support for the comfort complaint, but the broader claim that lighter equipment produces a better combat tradeoff would require casualty, injury, mobility, fragmentation, and mission-specific evidence that the video does not attempt to provide.

The presentation is strongest when Gurwitch stays close to equipment he personally trained with, tested, modified, or carried. Details such as the SCAR's failure modes, taped SPEAR shoulders, altered webbing, and the Mark 23's reception among Special Forces give the discussion a valuable user-level perspective that procurement histories can miss. The weakness is that firsthand experience, recollection, online feedback, tactical inference, and broader historical conclusions are sometimes delivered with similar certainty. There is also a structural mismatch between the "top five" framing and the six systems actually discussed after two final examples are rapidly added, while the later sections receive noticeably less development than the earlier firearms. Even so, the recurring lesson is coherent: equipment should be judged not by how impressive its requirement sounds but by whether the person carrying it gains enough capability to justify its weight, complexity, restrictions, and opportunity cost.

The result is an engaging veteran perspective on procurement mistakes whose strongest lessons come from specific observed failures rather than its broadest conclusions.
