The salvaged boards retain nails, gouges and visible age rather than being refinished into anonymous new lumber, while the decorative routing gives them a deliberate new identity. More importantly, the completed gate solves the original functional problem by allowing convenient operation without sacrificing the creator's larger architectural ambitions.
