Restoring the original window sashes becomes one of the renovation’s more consequential tests because the goal is not simply to make old wood look presentable. These pieces need to become functional windows in a watertight home while retaining as much of the building’s history as possible. After stripping and cleaning, the first task is therefore assessment: sanding away remaining paint and weathered material reveals which sashes are fundamentally sound and which contain soft wood, rot, damaged muntins, or sections that may require replacement. The encouraging discovery is that most appear considerably healthier beneath the surface than their age and exposure might suggest.

That inspection gives the restoration useful practical substance.
